Funeral reported in Sutton Advertiser of 16th February 1889
FUNERAL OF Mr. E. BRIDGER.
-On Monday afternoon the remains of Mr. Edwin Bridger, of Fountain-lodge, Balham, were interred in the family vault in the old portion of the Mitcham churchyard. The deceased, who was 44 years of age, died on the 5th inst. of consumption. He was the fourth son of the late lord of the manor, who died between three and four years ago. The funeral cortege, conducted by Mr. F. King, of Mitcham, consisted of an open car drawn by four horses containing the coffin, which was of polished oak with brass mountings, and was covered with wreaths, &c., a brougham and pair with Mr. James Bridger and Mr. F. Bridger, followed by two other broughams containing Messrs. Penfold, Sperling, Maynard, Atlee, Olden, &c. On arriving at the church the coffin was met by the vicar, the Rev. D. F. Wilson, who conducted the service in a very impressive manner. On leaving the church the “Dead March” in Saul was played by the organist. At the graveside many old inhabitants of the parish assembled to pay their last respects to the deceased gentleman, amongst whom we noticed Dr. Smith, Mr. Southerton, Mr. Clarke, Mr. Mouland, &c., &c. The inclement weather no doubt deterred many from being present.
