Funeral, Sutton Advertiser, 3rd May 1890

DEATH OF MR. JOHN WADE.
–We regret to have to announce the death of this old and well-known resident of Lower Mitcham, who expired on the evening of the 24th ult., at the advanced age of 89. He was a Liberal in politics, and in religion a Free Methodist, in fact he was formerly a local preacher, and travelled considerably in that capacity, especially in the North of England, where he was held in the highest esteem. In conjunction with his son-in-law, Mr. Powell, he at one time brought out a local paper, being then the occupier of the printing works now held by Mr. Compton. The deceased was also collector of rates and taxes for many years, and was one of the first members elected on the School Board, and had also been a member of the Board of Guardians. The funeral took place on Thursday afternoon in the parish churchyard. The cortege consisted of an open car bearing the coffin, which was of polished oak with black moulding and massive brass furniture. This was followed by mourning coach containing his brother-in-law, Mr. Jackson, Mr. Powell, son-in-law, Mr. Marshall, his medical adviser, and Mr. Kenyon, and a brougham containing Mr. Jasper Knight and Mr. Cross. Most of the old tradesmen and inhabitants were present at the grave-side to show their last respects to their old friend, amongst whom we noticed the Rev. S. Gibson, and Messrs. B. Wright, Hodges, Green, Summerfield, Dr. Smith, Messrs. Taylor, Clacke, Saunders, James, De Lemaine, Panther, Leach, Smith, Stickings, and many others. Amongst the floral offerings were wreaths from members of the Free Methodist Church, Mr. and Mrs. Kenyon, Mr. and Mrs. Hannington, and teachers and scholars of the higher grade school. The Church of England burial service was con-ducted by the vicar, after which the 735th hymn from Dr. Watts’ hymn book was sung by the numerous members of the United Free Church present, led by the Rev. S. Gibson. The vicar then pronounced the Benediction.
