From the Mitcham Tooting Mercury 13th July 1917

News has just reached Mr. John Butters, of Romeo Villas, London-road, that his brother, Corpl. George Albert Butters, of the 20th Hussars, was killed in action on May 20th. The Corporal was a son of ex-Police inspector Butters, who for many years was in charge of Mitcham Station. He was 29 years of age. When war broke out he was a reservist. He went to France with the Expeditionary Force and was in the retreat from Mons, the battles of the Marne, the Mane, Ypres, and Arras. On Easter Monday last he took part in the famous cavalry charge in a snowstorm. Writing to Mr. John Butters, on June 18th, an officer of deceased’s squadron paid a warm tribute to his brother’s gallantry, and stated that he was killed by a shell. Mr. Butters has three more sons in the Army, two of whom are with the New Zealand Force. The New Zealanders took part in the Gallipoli campaign. One was invalided home and the other was transferred to France, where he was wounded in the battle of the Somme.

September 1931 saw the reappearance of the Log after a lapse of four years. The association changed its name to the East Mitcham Ratepayers Association. Its officers were
