forward alone to meet an enemy counter-attack and held up the
enemy with bombs. He showed magnificent courage and initiative.

For conspicuous gallantry and good leadership at Robereart on
the 24th October, 1918. In the attack on the village, when the
platoon officers and senior N.C.O’s of his company became casualties,
he led the men forward against very strong opposition to his objective.
