Mitcham Women’s Athletic Club win in Holland – 1938

Women athletes win in Holland

AMSTERDAM, Sunday.

Miss Dorothy Odam, the famous English Olympic high Jumper, who is among the twenty-three women athletes entered by the Mitcham Women’s Athletic Club in an international match here today, finished second in the final of the 80 metres hurdles race, with a time of 12.3secs.

She was beaten by Miss A. M. Doorgeest, the Dutch Olympic hurdler, whose time was 11.9secs. Miss B. Proctor was fourth and Miss K. Tiffen, British Olympic hurdler, was fifth.

Mitcham

First three places in the 200 metres final went.to Mitcham AC. Miss M. Holloway was first in 25.8secs. Miss M. Stebbings second in 25.9secs, and Miss C. Furneaux third in 25.9secs.

Miss B Reid (Mitcham) was third in the throwing the Javelin event, which was won by Miss Dieben (Holland) with a throw of 40yds. 1ft. 7.8ins. Miss Reid’s distance was 33yds. 2ft. 3.4ins., and Miss Davis, who was fifth, threw 31yds, 1ft. 3.5ins.

Miss Betty Lock (Mitcham) had a keen duel with Miss Fanny Koen (Holland) in the 100 metres final and won in 12.1secs. after a brilliant final spurt. Miss Koen finished second in the same time. Miss B. Proctor and Miss Schenck, both of Mitcham, finished fourth and sixth respectively.

Miss Schenck won the long jump for Mitcham with a distance of 17ft. 11.75ins. beating Miss Koen (Holland), who Jumped 17ft. 7ins. Miss M. Holloway (Mitcham) was fifth with a jump of 16ft. 7.5ins.

Led all the way

Two Mitcham teams and four Dutch teams competed for the relay race, ten laps of 10 metres each. Mitcham led from the start and finished first in 2mins. 5.8secs. A Dutch team was second in 2mins 7.4secs., and the other Mitcham team third in 2mins. 14.2secs.

Miss A. E Niesink. Dutch Olympic athlete, won the throwing the discus event with 117ft. 4.265ins. The best British competitor was Miss Tilley, who finished sixth with a throw of 97ft. 11.59ins.

Miss Van Balen Slancken (Holland) beat Miss Dorothy Odam (Mitcham) in the high jump with a jump of 5ft. 1.02 ins. Miss Odam Jumped 5ft. 0.24ins.

Miss B. Reid (Mitcham) won the putting the weight for Britain with a putt of 37ft. 8.36ins.

Mitcham beat Holland by 69 points to 42.
