Front-room hairdressers criticised

Clapham Observer – Friday 23 October 1959

MITCHAM traders are complaining about the number of private houses in which women’s hairdressing establishments are being run. At a social held by Mitcham Chamber of Commerce last week, the question was raised, and members said it was unfair competition for the recognised salons, where the owners had increased rates and overheads to pay. The secretary, Mr. Dick Gifford is investigating the complaint and will report at the Chamber’s annual meeting next month. He said he felt certain there would be a good attendance at the meeting, and perhaps, if interest in the Chamber increased, regular meetings would be held.

Coal Man and City Gent – a Pathe newsreel

British Pathe has a newsreel about a coal man in Mitcham. The reel is dated 1967 and it’s on YouTube:

I’ve done a video reviewing this reel and which parts of Mitcham are shown. These are Gladstone Road yard of T. Bull coal merchants, the Lower Mitcham School on Benedict Road, the Star pub and Western Road. My review video is on YouTube:
