Cranmer Villas

Two pairs of semi-detached villas that were on north side Lower Green West, east of Glebe Path and west of Sibford.

Numbers 1 & 2, next to Glebe Path, can seen in this clip from a photo of the Mitcham War Memorial on Merton Memories.

The residents listed in the 1925 street directory were:

The 1881 electoral register shows the occupants as:

1, L. A. da COSTA Vice Consul for Brazil
2, Jane HALL

3, Jane GEDGE
4, Thomas MORGAN retired shipowner

This OS map of 1953 shows only the block numbered 3 and 4, and so the other block had been demolished before then.

This block was demolished in 1954, as mentioned in this article from Mitcham and Tooting Advertiser

CRANMER VILLAS

Mitcham Housing Committee have decided that the pair of semi-detached villas on the Lower Green, known as 3 and 4, Cranmer Villas, shall be demolished owing to their condition, and because their repair would be uneconomical.

The villas are part of the Glebe estate. A scheme for the development of the land to Glebe Path is being prepared.

World War 1 Connections

From the Surrey Recruitment Registers:

C A PALMER of 4 Cranmer Villas, Lower Green, Mitcham, aged 35 Years 4 Months, Journalist. Volunteered with the Derby Scheme on 11 December 1915 to the East Surrey Regiment (1st Batn).

Carew Road

Road that runs from south west end with Feltham Road, to north east end with Locks Lane. There are currently 30 houses, all with the postcode CR4 2JH.

2nd August, 1951

Labour councillor Tom RUFF … said that the POLE-CAREW family once owned land in Mitcham and Carew Road was named after them.

The first houses were built around 1902 as shown by this planning application by the Mizen brothers.

The OS map from 1911 shows a terrace of ten houses at the Feltham Road end, on the east side of Carew Road.

St Marks Church Vicarage House was built on the west side of Carew Road at the corner with Locks Lane in around 1930.

This 1953 OS map shows that the house numbers have been changed to even on the east side from 2 to 40, and odd on the west side from 1 to 11.

Planning applications in the 1950s show the houses planned for numbers 13 to 19, but it is not clear when they were built.

Application MIT1975 for 4 houses at number 13 was granted on 27/02/1953.
MIT1918 for a bungalow and garage on the site of 17 and 19 was granted on 28/11/1953.
