Mitcham was administered under the Croydon Rural District until April 1915 when it became the Urban District of Mitcham.
On 1st November, 1934 Mitcham became ‘incorporated’, which meant that it became a Borough and so could have a mayor. Before that, there were ‘chairmen’: ‘parish’ up to 1915, then ‘district council’ up to 1934.
